The Kwara State Government has initiated the establishment of Climate Change Clubs in public schools as part of its efforts to raise awareness about climate change and educate the public on the perils of deforestation.
Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman, the State Commissioner for Environment, made this known during the inauguration of the Climate Change Club at Government High School, Adeta, Ilorin, today.
In his remarks, Hon Usman underscored the critical importance of preserving economic trees and safeguarding the environment against unsustainable practices.
He emphasized the far-reaching consequences of deforestation, including biodiversity loss and ecological imbalance, which ultimately impact various aspects of human life such as health, food security, and livelihoods.
“In light of these challenges, we aim to equip students with knowledge about climate change and encourage their active involvement in combating deforestation, illegal waste disposal, and other environmental threats,” he said
The Commissioner Usman reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering the Ministry and its agencies to enforce existing laws against illegal logging and punish environmental offenders.
In his address, the Principal of Government High School, Adeta, pledged the unwavering support from the Climate Change Club in tackling deforestation and promoting a clean and healthy environment across the state.
The launch event was attended by members of the Kwara State Interministerial Committee on Climate Change, representing various ministries, environmental health professionals, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
