The Kwara State House of Assembly urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to allocate funds for the construction of a perimeter fence around Kwara State Polytechnic to prevent further encroachment on its land.
This decision was reached after the House considered the report of its committee on the public petition titled “Save our Soul” – addressing Kwara State Polytechnic Encroachment on Communal Land and High-Handedness” and “Petition Against the Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic Ilorin.”
The Chairman of the committee, Hon. Lawal Ayansola Salihu, representing the Malete/Ipaye/Oloru State Constituency, presented and laid the report on the House floor.
The House emphasized that constructing a perimeter fence around the institution’s land would prevent further encroachment and deter criminal activities by land grabbers and vandals.
The legislature also urged parties involved in the alleged land encroachment issue to maintain the status quo in areas where cases are pending before the courts, acknowledging the need to avoid interference in matters before competent courts.
Specifically, the House encouraged members of the Budo Lima communities to permit construction work at the TETFund project site to continue without hindrance, as it has a set completion duration.
Furthermore, the House advised Kwara State Polytechnic management and concerned communities to explore diplomatic avenues for resolving differences in alignment with the institution’s master plan.
The report stated, “Urged the Visitor to the Polytechnic, His Excellency, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Executive Governor of Kwara State, to approve funds for the management for the construction of perimeter fencing on the land of the institution as this will forestall further Encroachment and curb the criminalities of the land grabbers and vandals alike.”
The House also recommended that potential buyers of land near Kwara State Polytechnic seek clearance from the institution to avoid any encumbrances, with failure resulting in property forfeiture.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq was urged to direct the Ministry of Justice to facilitate a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on a PPP arrangement between the polytechnic management and owners of structures illegally built on the institution’s land to boost Internal Generated Revenue (IGR).
Lastly, the House urged Alanguas, Magajis, and community leaders to report any new/upcoming structural development within the defined territory of Kwara State Polytechnic to the Polytechnic authority.
