As the world celebrates Earth Day 2024, Kwara State stands out as a beacon of environmental sustainability in Nigeria, demonstrating commendable leadership in the adoption of renewable energy and green initiatives.
Under the visionary guidance of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the State has embarked on a series of transformative projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions and fostering a cleaner, greener future.
These efforts are not just about environmental stewardship but also about economic revitalization, as evident in the recent conversion of petrol-engine vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and the commissioning of the remodelled Flower Garden in Ilorin – a relaxation and recreational centre.
The official launch, which took place at the Rolling Energy station in Ilorin, marks a milestone in the State’s efforts at engendering greener environment.
At the heart of this initiative is Governor Abdulrazaq who has been vocal about the State’s commitment to renewable energy.
At the event the governor proudly announced that the State government had successfully converted twenty of its petrol-engine vehicles to natural gas.
This strategic move is not just about reducing emissions but also a direct response to President Bola Tinubu’s removal of the oil subsidy, which has historically exacerbated Nigeria’s reliance on petrol.
“This exercise reflects our commitment to leveraging the benefits of oil subsidy removal. Between last year and now, the president has endorsed Natural Gas over petrol, which is safer and more economical,” Governor Abdulrazaq stated.
He further highlighted that this conversion initiative would open up new job opportunities for the youth in Kwara, fostering both economic and environmental benefits.
Mubarak Danbata, the Chief Executive Officer of Rolling Energy, was also present at the launching, encouraging the public to support the Presidential Conversion of Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi).
Danbata assured attendees that the Rolling Energy Station could convert up to six petrol vehicles to CNG daily, underscoring the practical and scalable nature of this initiative. The shift towards CNG is not just a local effort but part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to transition to renewable energy.
This transition aims at reducing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels, promote cleaner energy sources, and align with global efforts to combat climate change.
The environmental benefits of switching to CNG are substantial. CNG is a cleaner alternative to petrol, producing fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
This reduction in emissions is crucial for Nigeria, a country grappling with the adverse effects of climate change.
Additionally, CNG is more economical, potentially lowering fuel costs for consumers and enhancing energy security.
Governor Abdulrazaq’s initiative is a practical approach to achieving these goals, providing a cleaner, more affordable alternative to traditional petrol. The Remodelled Flower Garden: A Green Sanctuary

The Flower Garden now stands as a beautiful and serene environment for the inhabitants of Ilorin, enhancing their quality of life while actively contributing to the global fight against climate change.
The Government’s investment in remodeling the facility has effectively created a green sanctuary that serves as a natural carbon sink, absorbing carbon dioxide, one of the primary greenhouse gases responsible for climate change.
Green spaces like the Flower Garden are vital for a sustainable urban environment. They serve as the lungs of the city, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
These areas also provide habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna, promoting biodiversity within urban settings.
