The Kogi State Government has unveiled its ambitious plans to tackle environmental challenges while fostering global partnerships to advance climate resilience.
This was disclosed at the ongoing COP29 in Baku by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Engr. Joseph Oluwasegun Stephen, during an interview with Sobi FM.
Engr. Stephen revealed that ahead of COP29, the state government conducted a comprehensive assessment of critical ecological sites, engaging consultants to evaluate life-threatening environmental issues in Kogi.
This assessment, he noted, aims to develop effective solutions to mitigate environmental degradation and restore ecological balance.
“The purpose of this assessment is to thoroughly evaluate the severity of damage and identify effective strategies for mitigating its impact and achieving sustainable management solutions,” he stated.
The designs and recommendations from the assessment were submitted to the state in readiness to seek support from federal government through the office of Hon minister for Environment.
The Commissioner also highlighted the state’s efforts to attract international collaborations, noting that Kogi’s presence at COP29 aims to foster partnerships with global stakeholders.
“We have tabled our case to international organizations to highlight the urgency of addressing these challenges and to seek their support in tackling the issues headlong,” he added.
One of the key initiatives showcased by the state is the ongoing Land Restoration program under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.
According to Stephen, this program seeks to revitalize degraded lands, boost agricultural productivity, and improve livelihoods across the state.
“The Kogi State Government’s active participation in COP29 underscores its commitment to addressing ecological challenges, implementing bold climate action plans, and fostering sustainable development through local and international partnerships,” he added.
Similarly the Special Adviser on Climate Change to the Governor of Kogi State, Michael Onimisi Ajibade, commended Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for prioritizing the state’s climate agenda.
He noted that the governor’s decision to send a delegation to COP29 has opened up new opportunities for networking and collaboration.
“COP29 has been impactful. It has afforded us the opportunity to engage with global climate change partners and explore solutions to Kogi State’s ecological challenges. When we return home, we will implement the lessons learned to benefit our people,” Ajibade said.
