Dub it ladies at war, and you will be right. Term it survival of the fittest and you will equally be right as the 14th edition of Women Africa Cup of Nations otherwise called WAFCON kicks off today in two Moroccan cities of Rabat and Casablanca. The three weeks women soccer fiesta will see 12 countries lock horns in battle of supremacy.
The tournament doubles as African qualifiers to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the top four teams at the WAFCON will automatically qualify for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, with two more teams advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs to contest for the final three FIFA Women’s World Cup spots.
Hosts Morocco will kick off the tournament in Rabat against Burkina Faso at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Complex at 21h30 today.
The tournament’s finale takes place at the same venue at 21h00 on 23 July.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons who are seeking their 10th title are one of the top favorites not doubt and perhaps one of the most feared considering their pedigree. The begin their quest on July 4th against rivals Bayana Bayana of South Africa, Botswana three days later and finish the group stage with a clash with Burundi on July 10th.
Every team in the competition came with determination not only to win but also to pick a ticket to the world cup. Thus the tendency to fight to the finish on the part of all the teams cannot be ruled out. The big question is who survives the rumble in the jungle? Keep the fingers cross and follow as African ladies file out in a battle of wits and tactics. Let the battle begin.
