The Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has set up a seven-man committee to organize a rally in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) over the lingering industrial action in the nation’s educational institutions.
The state NLC Chairman, Comrade Aliyu Issa Ore, who inaugurated the committee in Ilorin, urged it to plan and organize a hitch free rally slated for 26 and 27 of July 2022.
Ore said the proposed rally was sequel to a directive from the National Headquarters of NLC requesting its state councils nationwide to embark on mega rally for federal government to yield to the demand of the striking academic staff and workers of the higher institutions of learning.
He expressed concern over the seeming delay in the resolution of the disagreement that led to the Industrial disquiet.
The seven-man rally committee has Comrade Adeniran Rafiu Adebayo as Chairman and Comrade Olusina Owoeye as Secretary.
Members of the committee include Comrade Ibiwoye Yomi, Comrade Saheed Olesin, Comrade AbdulRasheed Usman, Comrade Olusola Ife and Chairman, Kwara State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed.
It would be recalled that ASUU began its strike action February 14th this year while other unions also followed suit due to the failure of the federal government to honour the previous agreements reached with them.
Meanwhile, the National Headquarters of the NLC had directed the state councils to mobilize 3000 members of the affiliates of the congress to hold a mega rally in solidarity with its affiliates in education sector and protest against the insensitivity of the government to the Nigerian students and workers in the educational sector.
