Professor Abdulfatai Bamidele Olokoba of the University of Ilorin, yesterday, attributed underfunding of health sector as contributory factor to the gastrointestinal endoscopy services in Nigeria.
Professor Olokoba who is a professor of Medicine made the disclosure while speaking on the topic: Looking through a tube to see the world within the tube, experiences and challenges of gastrointestinal endoscopy in Nigeria at his inaugural lecture.
According to him, the Gastrointestinal endoscopy, is a medical term relating to intestines and stomach.
He said shortage of manpower, poor working environment, lack of job satisfaction, poor renumeration and insecurity have all impacted negatively on the our health system saying specialist on this field should be trained and retrained.
He added that medical equipments on Gastrointestinal health issues are very sophisticated, delicate and expensive stressing that there should be proper maintainance of the gadgets and spare part should be made available.
