The integrated Emirates Field Hospital in Abéché, Chad, has provided medical care and treatment services to more than 9,000 patients since its inauguration on April 8th.
The establishment of the field hospital is part of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) ongoing support for the Sudanese people, who have been affected by the conflict in Sudan that began in early April 2023.
This initiative also supports Chad’s efforts in addressing the humanitarian crisis and alleviating the impact of the large influx of Sudanese refugees into the country.
Costing over $20 million, the hospital boasts various medical departments including pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, general surgery, and internal medicine.
It features an operating room, emergency services, a laboratory, a pharmacy, and radiology departments. The facility also includes 10 intensive care unit (ICU) beds and 50 inpatient beds, along with other medical specialties.
Staffed by 22 doctors and 92 nurses, the hospital is further supported by 12 medical support staff and 41 non-medical workers.
The UAE’s ongoing humanitarian, relief, and developmental efforts include initiatives such as the Emirates Field Hospital in Am-Djarass, the rehabilitation and maintenance of schools, the drilling of wells, the distribution of food aid, and the installation of lighting on roads and in markets. Additionally, a coordination office for aid has been established in Chad.
Over the past five years, the UAE has provided approximately $467 million in aid to Chad, with around $100 million specifically allocated to support the refugees hosted by Chad.
This substantial support underscores the UAE’s commitment to providing essential needs for Sudanese refugees in Chad as well as their host communities, reinforcing its role in global humanitarian efforts.
