A Former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Is’haq Modibbo Kawu, has emphasized the need for media integrity and unity among journalists, warning against practices that undermine the credibility of the profession.
Kawu made the call while hosting members of the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) to an Iftar (break of fast) gathering in Ilorin.

Speaking at the event, he expressed concerns over the growing trend of media houses bestowing awards on politicians, describing it as a major factor eroding public trust in journalism.
“It is unfortunate that many media organizations have turned awards into a business, giving them to politicians without merit. This practice weakens the integrity of the media and must be discouraged,” he said.
The veteran journalist also reiterated the importance of ethical journalism, urging practitioners to prioritize truth, objectivity, and fairness in their reportage.
He further stressed the need to protect freedom of expression, particularly in the digital media space, as a means of ensuring a well-informed society.

In his remarks ASKOMP Chairman and Publisher of Informant247, Salihu Shola Taofeeq, appreciated Dr. Kawu’s dedication to the media industry and his consistent support for journalists in Kwara State.
The event, attended by leading online media practitioners in the state, provided an opportunity for discussions on the challenges facing journalism and possible solutions to strengthen the profession.
