……urges state governments to support FG methane emissions reduction

The Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Hon. Mohammed Jamilu Katsina, and member representing Faskari/ Kankara/Sabuwa Federal constituency of Katsina state, has commended Nigeria’s participation at the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP 28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

He lauded the country’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges, particularly methane emissions.

Speaking with newsmen in Dubai on the sidelines of an event held at the Nigeria pavilion, Hon. Katsina described Nigeria’s representation at COP 28 as a significant step toward addressing environmental issues on a global scale.

According to him “The conference provided a platform for nations to collaborate and develop strategies to mitigate climate change and its impacts,” he said.

Emphasizing on the importance of Nigeria’s active participation in such international forums, he highlighted the need for collective action to combat environmental challenges.

Hon. Katsina stressed the urgency of reducing methane emissions, citing their detrimental impact on the environment and public health in line with the renewed hope of President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that methane, as a potent greenhouse gas, contributes significantly to climate change and emphasized the need for proactive measures to curb its emissions.

Hon. Katsina emphasized that concerted efforts at both the federal and state levels are essential to effectively address methane emissions and mitigate their impact on the environment.

He also underscored the critical role of state governments in supporting the federal government’s efforts to achieve a 30 percent reduction in methane emissions by 2030.

According to him ” I want to urge state governments to prioritize environmental sustainability and align their policies with the federal government’s emission reduction targets.

” I calling for the implementation of proactive measures, including the adoption of cleaner energy sources and the regulation of industrial emissions, to achieve the set targets.

“The collaboration between the federal and state governments will be pivotal in achieving the ambitious goal of reducing methane emissions by at least 30 percent by 2030,” he added.
