In a bid to address the need for a public university in Igbomina land, professionals from the region, under the aegis of Igbomina Professional Association have passionately advocated for the establishment of the proposed Kwara state University of Education in the area.
President of the association Barrister Bayo Atoyebi, at press briefing held at the NUJ press centre in Ilorin today commended the state government for initiating the project.
He said the call becomes necessary to address the developmental imbalance in the state where more than 90 percent of tertiary institution is located in Kwara central to the detriment of the two other regions.
He emphasized that despite the significant contributions of Igbomina land to the state in terms of population and resources, there is a notable absence of a public university that could potentially provide employment opportunities and foster development for the people and the entire Igbomina region.
Barrister Atoyebi revealed that the association had submitted a memorandum on this critical matter and deemed it necessary to further address the press to amplify their plea.
He highlighted that Igbomina land not only offers a substantial portion of the state but also provides a serene and peaceful environment conducive to academic work and intellectual activities.
“We also wish to state that Igbomina land has vast expanses of land suitable for educational institutions, such as the proposed University of Education,” Barrister Atoyebi expressed.
“We firmly believe that the establishment of a government university in Igbomina land would not only boost government programs but also attract various forms of businesses and other developmental projects. Additionally, it will enhance and promote the government’s inclusion of Igbomina people in its scheme of development.”
The association expressed confidence in Governor Abdulraman Abdulrasaq’s leadership, describing him as a decent and fair-minded leader.
They express conviction that the governor will consider their request for justice and fairness in the establishment of the University of Education and trust that he will listen to their plea to site the university in Igbomina land.
