The Kwara State House of Assembly has called for urgent action to address road safety concerns on the Ganmo Highway in a bid to guard against preventable accidents.
This was sequel to the adoption of a matter of general public importance titled “Need to Stop Roadside Trading in Ganmo Highway” moved by the member representing Essa/Shawo/Igboidun constituency, Gbenga Abdulwaheed.
The House also urged the Ifelodun Local Government Council to as a matter of urgency relocate traders in Ganmo and Amoyo from the roadside to the original designated market space.
The Speaker of the house Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu read the resolutions during today’s plenary.
Other lawmakers in their submissions stressed the need to put modalities in place to discourage hawking and display of goods along major highways in the state to avert disasters associated with buying and selling by the roadside.
The lawmakers highlighted the need to prevent accidents caused by roadside trading, emphasizing measures such as installing speed breakers and relocating traders to designated market spaces.
In another development the assembly has called for more sensitization and enlightenment on the dangers of drug abuse and other substances in the state.
The house made the call after a matter of general public importance titled “ The need for drug prevention and control policy in Kwara state” sponsored by hon. Seun Oguniyi representing Ojomu-Balogun constituency.
Hon. Oguniyi in the lead debate stressed the need to regulate the use of illicit drugs which according to him is at an alarming rate in the state.
He emphasized that more enlightenment needs to be done to sensitize the people on the dangers inherent in the abuse of drugs.
Other lawmakers who spoke on the matter commended Governor Abdulralman Abdulrasaq for appointing a special Assistant on drugs prevention and control which shows his commitment to tackle drug menace and the dangers it posed to the future of youth in Kwara State.
The Speaker Hon. Yakubu Danladi Danladi-Salihu while reading the prayers called on the state government to direct the Ministry of Tertiary Education to ensure periodic tests are conducted by all tertiary institutions in the state for students in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency NDLEA at approved testing centers by the agency in the state.
