The Kwara State House of Assembly has called on Governor Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq to direct the Ministry of Environment to improve sanitation infrastructure and ensure proper waste management practices to prevent disease outbreaks in the state.

The directive follows a Matter of General Public Importance moved by Ilorin Central representative, Hon. Magaji Oba Abdulkadir, during the plenary session today.

Leading the debate, Abdulkadir, who is also the House Leader, explained that Cholera, caused by the vibrio bacterium, spreads rapidly through contaminated water and food, posing a severe threat to public health.

Reading the resolution of the house the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Danlad-Salihu, urged the Governor to instruct the Ministry of Health to conduct statewide Cholera vaccination campaigns targeting high-risk populations.

The Speaker also called for the implementation of surveillance systems to detect and respond swiftly to any suspected Cholera cases.

In another development, the House has urged the State Government to intensify efforts to eliminate security threats across Kwara to enhance food security.

This appeal follows a Motion on Notice titled “The Need to Mobilize for Increased Agricultural Productivity and Subsistence Farming in Rural Agrarian Communities and Address Other Challenges Facing the Agricultural Sector for Enhanced Food Security in Kwara State,” raised by Hon. Ogunniyi David Sheun, representing Ojomu/Balogun Constituency, during the plenary session.

Ogunniyi also encouraged Kwarans to utilize every available space for agriculture purposes , a move he says will increase food production in the state.
