The Kwara State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has demanded an immediate refund of the contentious N1,000 deduction labeled as “Special Union Deduction,” reportedly taken from teachers’ October 2024 salaries.
This deduction was carried out by the Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) without consultation or authorization from its affiliated unions, including the NUT.
In a statement addressed to teachers , NUT Principal Assistant Secretary-General, Moni Mike Modesty Itua, clarified that the deduction was executed unilaterally by the state NLC leadership.
He said the NUT and other affiliates of the NLC have since requested that the deducted amount be promptly refunded to all affected workers.
Itua expressed regret for the tension arising from both the wage implementation issues and the unauthorized N1,000 deductions.
He assured members that the union is committed to addressing these matters with transparency and urged teachers to remain calm and patient while resolutions are pursued.
Addressing concerns surrounding the recent implementation of the new minimum wage, Itua noted that the union is collaborating with labour and relevant government agencies to verify the status of the minimum wage adjustments and seek swift resolutions.
