A Senior Medical practitioner at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Dr. Mubarak Ijaya, has called on the general public to take necessary precautions as new cases of the mpox disease is announced across the country.
Dr. Ijaya in an exclusive interview with Sobi FM explained that Mpox, which has a 21-day incubation period, typically presents symptoms such as fever, headache, back pain, and most notably, skin rashes.
He emphasized the need for individuals experiencing these symptoms to seek medical attention promptly.
“I advise anyone who notices these symptoms to visit the nearest health facility for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing and immediate treatment if required,” Ijaya stated.
According to the medical expert, Mpox is primarily transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces.
He further highlighted preventive measures, including social distancing, regular hand washing, the use of face masks, and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.
“We all have a role to play in preventing the spread of this virus. It’s important to remain cautious, follow health protocols, and report any suspected symptoms early,” he advised.
It would be recalled that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a global public health emergency in August, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and adherence to preventive measures worldwide.
