The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has received the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Simon Stiell, at the Federal Ministry of Environment, as part of efforts to strengthen partnerships and position Nigeria for greater participation in global climate negotiations.
The visit, which comes ahead of COP 30 in Belem, Brazil, provided an opportunity to highlight Nigeria’s potential bid to host COP 32 in 2027.
Nigeria’s Strategic Push for COP 32
Hosting the UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP) is expected to offer several strategic benefits to Nigeria, including emphasizing priority areas in climate action at both continental and national levels.
Demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to addressing climate change while increasing global recognition.
Attracting investments, creating jobs, and boosting the local economy through sustainable development initiatives.
The visit further underscores Nigeria’s growing importance in international climate discussions as the country continues to advocate for policies that address climate resilience, energy transition, and environmental sustainability.
By hosting COP 32, Nigeria aims to reinforce its position as a leader in Africa’s climate diplomacy and accelerate global cooperation toward sustainable development.
