The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) says it has launched a new initiative aimed at providing alternative energy solutions to address the persistent power supply challenges in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

A board member of TETFund Engr. Nurudeen Adeyemi, disclosed this on Friday April 17, 2025 during the 5th Strategic Media Stakeholders’ Seminar organised by the Sobi FM chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kwara council in Ilorin.

He said the initiative, known as the Alternative Energy Solution Initiative, is part of the agency’s strategic intervention to ensure steady and sustainable electricity in public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Adeyemi noted that the initiative is being driven by a newly inaugurated steering committee set up by TETFund’s board, chaired by former Katsina state governor, Aminu Masari.

“Our goal is to reduce the over dependence on the national grid by investing in clean and alternative energy sources that will guarantee uninterrupted power supply to institutions,” he said.

The project will focus on renewable energy options, particularly solar power, as a long-term solution to the sector’s energy crisis.

He stressed that lack of reliable power has continued to affect research, innovation, and teaching in higher institutions.

“A situation where academic unions have to shut down institutions due to power issues, like we witnessed at the University of Ibadan, is unacceptable,” Adeyemi said.

“TETFund is taking a proactive approach by supporting infrastructure that will make our campuses centres of excellence, he said.”
