…..reiterates commitment to clean, hygienic environment

As part of the activities marking this year’s National Environmental Sanitation Day, the Kwara State Government, through the Ministry of Environment, has mobilized personnel to evacuate an illegal dumpsite along Akerebiata Abattoir Bridge in Ilorin East Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking during the exercise, the Commissioner for Environment, Hajiya Nafisat Buge, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Abubakar Ayinla, emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment for all residents.
The Commissioner highlighted the urgency of the exercise in light of the ongoing cholera outbreak in some parts of the country, stressing the need for concerted efforts to prevent such outbreaks in Kwara State.
She assured that the government, under the leadership of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, remains committed to ensuring the state remains cholera-free.
“As we commemorate this year’s National Environmental Sanitation Day, the state government is dedicated to maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment.
“Various measures have been implemented to prevent disease outbreaks, particularly cholera, which is affecting several states in the country,” she said.
“We are addressing multiple issues at once. The National Environmental Sanitation Day, observed on June 28th annually, serves as a reminder to be proactive in preventing diseases like cholera while we conduct our monthly sanitation exercises.”
She urged residents to cooperate with the government by maintaining a clean environment and avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially on riverbanks and road medians.
In response, Alhaji Mahmud Mohammed Erubu, representing the residents of Mountain View Estate, Akerebiata area, thanked the state government for clearing the dumpsite.
He clarified that the dumpsite was not created by the community members but by passersby who discard their refuse in the area.
Erubu called for effective collaboration between the community and the Ministry to monitor the area and enforce penalties for offenders.
