Many people, including commercial motorcycle operators, traders and passengers, secured varying degrees of injury this morning when a Nigerian Correctional Service bus rammed into them at the popular Oja Oba market in Ilorin the state capital.
Sobi FM correspondent who was at the scene gathered that that the bus coming from Oke Kura correctional facility was reportedly driving against traffic and traveling at a high speed, lost control before ramming into people, leaving them injured and others scampering for safety.
Eyewitness told our correspondent that no fewer than seven individuals were injured with two of them in critical condition rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
Meanwhile the Kwara command of the Nigerian Correctional Service in it’s reaction stated that the incident was caused by an attempt by some hoodlums to break into the convoy of the service vehicles conveying high profile inmates to court.
The Public Relations Officer of the command Adegbulugbe Olumide in a statement made available to Sobi FM, said the attempt resulted in the driver of the bus loosing control which saw the prison vehicle damaged and injuries on some okada riders and personnel of the service.
He added that two of the custodial vehicles which managed to secure their passage was again attacked at Niger road junction, but they were able to manoeuvre their way to the court.
Adegbulugbe however maintained that no life was lost in the incident as those who sustained injuries are presently responding to treatment at the hospital where they were taken to.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Okasanmi Ajayi, confirmed the development.
“Yes, we are aware. We are on it and will give details as soon as we finish the investigation,” he said in a terse message.
