The British High Commission in Nigeria has restated the United Kingdom’s commitment to maintaining robust ties with Nigeria following the release of the UK Immigration White Paper on Thursday morning.
In an official statement made available to Sobi FM, a spokesperson for the British High Commission described the UK as a proud and welcoming nation that values the contributions of Nigerians to its economy, culture, and society.
“The UK enjoys strong, long-standing people-to-people links with Nigeria. We are proud that the UK is still considered a top destination for Nigerians to work, study, visit and settle and value the contribution this brings to the UK,” the spokesperson stated.
The newly unveiled White Paper outlines key reforms to the UK’s legal migration system, with a focus on restoring “order, control and fairness,” while also aiming to reduce net migration and stimulate economic growth.
The UK government said the changes would be implemented gradually, assuring that it will collaborate with the Federal Government of Nigeria and other relevant stakeholders once specific implementation details are available.
“The UK White Paper sets out reforms to legal migration, including restoring order, control and fairness to the system, bringing down net migration and promoting economic growth,” the spokesperson added.
Highlighting the UK’s continued openness to global talent and ideas, the statement noted: “We have a proud tradition as an outward-looking nation, investing and trading abroad, and welcoming the creativity, ideas and diversity of those who come to contribute here.”
The latest reforms come amid growing debates within the UK on immigration policy, with Nigerians ranking among the top foreign nationals studying and working in Britain in recent years.
