A youth-based organisation working on climate change Brain Builders Youth Development Initiative BBYDI, has called on the Kwara State government to intervene in the recent cases of flood in different communities in the state.
The recent floods have wreaked havoc, causing significant displacement and disrupting the lives of countless residents.
BBYDI, in collaboration with Sobi FM, has visited some of these communities and interacted with many victims.
Addressing the underlying factors that exacerbate these disasters, including climate change, and emphasising the urgent need for government intervention in safeguarding the vulnerable rural communities affected by such calamities is imperative.

Climate change has increased the severity of flooding events, and immediate action is required to mitigate the risks and build resilience within the affected areas.
“As a result, the government’s intervention is crucial. The Kwara State government must prioritise providing emergency relief and assistance to displaced individuals and families.
“Adequate resources, such as food, clean water, medical aid, and temporary shelters, must be promptly allocated to alleviate the suffering and ensure the well-being of those affected.
“The government must focus on long-term strategies that address the underlying causes of these floods. This includes investing in sustainable infrastructure projects, implementing effective drainage systems, and promoting climate-smart agricultural practices.
“By adopting such measures, the government can contribute to minimising the impact of future floods and protect the lives and livelihoods of the most vulnerable populations.
“Also, the government should launch comprehensive awareness campaigns to inform residents about the risks associated with floods and the importance of adopting preventive measures.
These initiatives can empower communities to take proactive steps in safeguarding their lives and properties, fostering a culture of resilience essential in the face of an uncertain climate future.
This is a wake-up call for the government to prioritise the well-being of rural communities and invest in sustainable solutions that can protect lives and livelihoods. The time for action is now.
