A viral claim won twitter as being making the rounds with a picture supposedly taken in Osun State during a campaign for one of the political parties.The Post has since garnered 309 comments, 278 retweets and 2,122 likes. Verdict
The viral pictorial claim captioned by the convener “Osun State no be your mate” , creating a notion that the event in the said picture was from Osun State is false.
VerificationChecks by FactCheckElection reveal that none of the reputable media houses has used the image for any election purpose.
This claim was refuted by another twitter user, Joke Dolapo @jokedolapo user who was live at the event, he said “That is an Eid prayer group in ilorin. I was there live. Don’t make yourself happy with a fake picture.”
A Google reverse image search revealed that the image was actually captured during the Eid Durbar Festival in Ilorin, Kwara State.
“We gathered that the People’s democratic party (PDP) will be doing their gubernatorial campaign in Osun State on the 14th and that may have been the trigger to post such malinformation online.
According to Wikipedia, The Durbar festival is an annual cultural, religious and equestrian festival celebrated in several northern cities of Nigeria including. Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zazzau, Bauchi, Bida and Illorin.
The festival marks the end of Ramadan and also coincides with the Muslim festivities of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitri.
Context
Misinformation has been the order of the day especially during pre-election times, be it an off-cycle election like the coming Osun State Gubernatorial or even the general elections.
Many of these claims are targeted at well meaning citizens to create an agenda for discussion and shape public opinion.An example of misleading photo stories by Netizens and public figures alike can be traced back to the 2019 pre election time frame by an aide to President Muhamadu Buhari, Mrs Lorreta Onochie with reports refuting her pictorial claims about an aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party Atiku Abubakar at the then election.
Hence, media literacy is advised to stay above these mischievous act of malinforming, misinformation and disinformation the general public.
